June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and we wanted to spotlight a kindness act performed by our Random Acts staff members that impact this community.
One of the most difficult arenas for LGBTQ+ individuals to find acceptance is in sports. A recent study done by Stonewall, an activist group in the United Kingdom, found that, “most people want to see action against anti LGBT language in sport, but only a quarter feel confident calling it out.” Stonewall is working to challenge that through their campaign, Rainbow Laces. This movement encourages athletes to wear rainbow laces in their sneakers and cleats to show support for the LGBTQ+ community, and Random Acts joined in the fun.
Tie them Tight and Bright
Regional Representative for UK – South and ROI Jade Wardle learned about this campaign and immediately wanted to bring it to her school, The University of Gloucestershire. Jade used funds from Random Acts and partnered with the university’s LGBT society to provide laces for several of the sports teams at the university. “I bought 116 pairs of rainbow laces to support the Stonewall campaign,” said Jade, “spreading the message that our sports teams, athletes, and officials support the LGBT community. They are inclusive, here for equality and to provide a safe place”
Laces were given to the university’s netball, football, rugby, and hockey teams, as well as individual athletes. They were also given to rugby and football officials, who are university scholars. Jade is glad she could help bring some color and support to the field and court while supporting a great campaign.
