12 Acts Of Kindness: A Holiday HAWS Surprise

12acts_updated-01-01We’re celebrating the holidays the only way we know how: By getting kind and spreading a little cheer wherever possible!

Random Acts believes strongly in leading by example — that’s why this year, for the second year in a row, our staff members have taken the initiative and performed their own sponsored acts of kindness for deserving members of the community. Inspired by your galvanizing examples, we visited families in Nicaragua, dropped off presents to kids who might not otherwise get a visit from Santa Claus, and bonded with some fuzzy canine friends too.

HAWS buildingA few of those excited canines were residents of The Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), an animal shelter in southeastern Wisconsin that was founded in 1965. Home to nearly 8,000 animals per year, HAWS spends its days caring for the gentle-natured cats, dogs, birds, smaller mammals like guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils… and everything in between. An “open-admissions” shelter, HAWS accepts all animals regardless of age, health, temperament or breed.

With so many animal friends hanging around the HAWS headquarters in Waukesha, the Donationsshelter has had to expand its facility more than once. And given how quickly things at the growing organization seem to be rolling along, Random Acts thought it would be a good idea to ease that burden, even if only by a small amount.

Organizing a holiday haul of treats, toys, food, and cleaning supplies using the shelter’s wishlist, Random Acts senior staff writer Melanie had the opportunity to visit the kindhearted HAWS team and deliver the goods in person, saying a quick “hello” to a handful of rambunctious kittens and puppies while she was at it.

GroupThanks to dozens of similar donations and the support of the local community (including Random Acts and all of our generous followers), it’s a guarantee that HAWS and its pets will enjoy a very joyous holiday season this year — and given everything that the group has done for others over the past few decades, it’s clear that they deserve it.

Make sure to follow our blog closely over the next two weeks as we document all the ways our staff are celebrating this year’s 12 Acts of Kindness — and if you’re feeling the itch to perform a sponsored act yourself, make sure to apply for funding using one of our handy Act Proposal forms here.

Let’s celebrate the season with kindness!
