We’ve had so much fun sharing some of our staff’s Kindness for Refugees acts with you this week! Today, we wrap up with one more story from our coordinated effort to improve the lives of refugee families.
Building a Bridge
Random Acts US South East Representative Emily Rivera-Jackson reached out to El Centro to see how she could best help them to help refugee families. El Centro, an organization located in Ohio, provides services to those who may struggle to advocate for themselves due to language barriers. In addition to helping those they serve to access resources within the community, El Centro also provides case management, advocacy, interpretation and translation services for medical and social service appointments, distributes educational material to Latino communities, provides assistance with job seeking and employment guidance, offers GED and ESOL courses on site, and runs a youth leadership program.
Lending a Hand
El Centro told Emily that they have been focusing on helping Guatemalan refugee families affected by recent home raids and deportations. Many children have been separated from their families as a result of these deportations, and El Centro makes weekly visits to drop off supplies for these children and families.
Emily purchased baby diapers, diaper wipes, baby food, clothing, blankets, baby shampoo, soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other toiletries. Since the new school year was approaching, she also bought backpacks and school supplies for the school-aged kids. All of these supplies were dropped off to El Centro so that they could be distributed during the organization’s weekly drop off.
