Every act of kindness done through Random Acts gets an extra boost through the Writing Department. The Writing Staff turn the act into a story, one that can be shared to encourage more acts of kindness. This department also functions to inform and educate supporters of other kindness related initiatives and organizations.

Jessica Burbridge

Writing Manager

Jessica B fun headshot

Jessica started with Random Acts in April of 2019. Striving for something more fulfilling than her current career provided, she knew she wanted to do more to help those around her. She started out with Random Acts by creating the newsletters, but she found that the organization allowed her to gain experience in fields she was more passionate about and brought her joy and new challenges. Jessica has a B.A. in English from the University of Florida. She is married and has two cats. Outside of work and Random Acts, Jessica is passionate about Dungeons and Dragons, cross-stitching, letter/postcard writing, and fighting for equal rights. She is a deeply empathetic person who wants to make a difference in the lives of others.

If Jessica could have a superpower, she would choose the power of teleportation because even though she loves airports, the ease of not driving anywhere and time saved would compensate for that loss.

Dreana Ferguson

Assistant Manger – Writing

Dreana was first drawn to Random Acts because of their focus on grassroot kindness. She loves the fact that they empower people to perform life-changing acts of kindness in their own communities and around the world. Dreana began fundraising for and volunteering with the Dreams to Acts: Nicaragua project in 2015, before officially joining the organization as a Staff Writer in 2018.

When she is not writing, Dreana enjoys spending days surrounded by bones, books, and yarn. Once she has completed her PhD in anthropology, she would like to become a board certified forensic anthropologist. Her dream job would be to split time between forensic case work and human rights work. Dreana’s non-writing hobbies include reading, crafting, spending time with family, and spoiling her cat.

If Dreana could have any superpower, she would choose teleportation (ideally through time and space) so that she could easily visit friends and family around the world. She would love to visit Nicaragua more often!

“Have courage and be kind… Where there is kindness, there is goodness, and where there is goodness, there is magic.” — Disney’s Cinderella (2015)

Amanda Scarangella

Writing Team Lead

Amanda joined Random Acts in March 2020 as a Writer and now works as Writing Team Lead since January 2021.

Raised in northern Virginia, she spent whimsical summers in Roanoke visiting her grandparents and running wild through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Having earned a B.S. in psychology from Virginia Tech, Amanda has returned to northern Virginia where she now works in the public relations and communications sphere. Outside of work and volunteering, she lives with her loving partner co-parenting their rambunctious dog, Cocoa, and sneaky firefish, Chile. She is a passionate recreational chef and baker, and she enjoys reading, biking, scuba diving and trying her hand at gardening.

Most importantly, she believes that storytelling can change the world, because every story is worth sharing if it’s told for the right reasons.

If Amanda could have any superpowerit would be “endless energy” so she could stay awake all day reading, writing and learning, but still choose to sleep when she wanted to dream a little.

Chrisha Anderson

Writing Team Lead

Chrisha- FunHeadshot

Chrisha joined the Random Acts writing team in the summer of 2019. In her day job, Chrisha works as a mental health therapist, but she also researches and writes about fandom and mental health, and loves talking about the therapeutic benefits of geek culture to literally anyone who will listen. Chrisha was excited to join the staff of Random Acts because she knows that helping others doesn’t just help the world, but helps us, and that for her, being part of a community that prioritizes kindness is wonderfully healing self-care.

If Chrisha had one superpower, she would want the ability to visit fictional worlds so she could go on adventures in the TARDIS, stay at the Rosebud Motel, and have movie night in the Bunker.

“Hope strengthens, fear kills.” – Karen Marie Moning

Ann-Kathrin Bomkamp

Copy Editor

Ann-Kathrin joined the Random Acts Writing Team as a Copy Editor in August 2019 and has since also taken on the role of writer.  Holding university degrees in communications as well as PR and communication management, writing and copy editing are also part of her day job – in several languages, to be exact. She is fluent in three languages and can hold at least a short conversation in four other languages.

She loves traveling, live music, photography, writing, and learning new languages. A perfect vacation for her would be one where she can combine all of those things. She has recently discovered her more artistic side and also enjoys crocheting, painting, and hand lettering.

If Ann-Kathrin had one superpower, she would choose teleportation and the ability to speak every language in the world.

“I believe in kindness. Also in mischief. Also in singing, especially when singing is not necessarily prescribed.” – Mary Oliver

Rachel Finucane

Staff Writer

RachelF- FunHeadshot

Rachel first joined Random Acts in June 2019. With various experiences in both sports media and entertainment journalism under her belt, interning for such companies as the AFLs Fremantle Football Club, Supanova Comic-Con & Gaming, and Nerds and Beyond, she decided to use her talents towards making the world a better place, one kindness blog at a time. Residing in Australia, Rachel holds a unique perspective in a predominantly American based team. While the time difference makes for having a morning scroll filtered through mass notifications, it enables the team to see which areas could be better helped internationally.

If Rachel had one superpower, it would be traveling back in time so she could relive moments she perhaps took for granted.

Karyl Anne Fischer

Staff Writer

KarylAnnefun headshot

Karyl Anne started at Random Acts in 2019. For her, Random Acts feels like a family dedicated to spreading kindness and making the world a more just place. Karyl Anne is a professional nerd and an English professor at a community college focusing on pop culture, queer theory, activism, and the power of using one’s own voice for justice. She hopes that her students not only emerge from her classes as stronger writers, but as people who know they are cared for by those around them. Karyl Anne is a believer in chosen families.

She is passionate about comic books, cartoons, genre television, tattoos, cosplay, spending time with her husband (and their pets), and otters.  She is very fond of being an aunt to twelve wonderful niblings and counting deer in her backyard.

If Karyl Anne had one superpower, it would be teleportation so she could spend more time with her sister and nephews in Ireland.

Chauntel Lopez

Copy Editor

Chauntel L Fun headshot

Chauntel is an attorney serving low-income clients of Utah in the areas of consumer protection and immigration.

She has an undergraduate degree in theater and spends her free time applying various critical theories to television shows and movies for fun.

Some of the best moments of her life have been marrying her best friend, passing the bar exam, running the Seattle marathon alongside the cast of Supernatural, and finding out that she got the position of Copy Editor with Random Acts.

She so admires those of you out there performing acts of kindness and thanks you for making her excited to live and give.

If Chauntel had one superpower, she would choose indestructibility—she thinks she’d like to try running into burning buildings and jumping out of planes.

Mariella David

Staff Writer

Mariella D fun headshot

Mariella crossed paths with Random Acts during the Gish of 2017, which led her to join the Random Acts writing team in the spring of 2020.

When she is not studying English and Italian at university, Mariella can usually be found curled up with a good book (or writing her own), taking photos of nature, or sewing. If that is not the case, she is learning Welsh, listening to Queen, or discussing why the Star Wars prequels and both Tron movies are vastly underrated.

If Mariella had one superpowershe would be able to create invisible barriers to stop animals from crossing human sidewalks and streets (especially snails, because they somehow seem to love sidewalks). Being kind to humans and animals has always been important to Mariella, which is what makes being a part of the Random Acts team so special to her.

Madison Petro

Staff Writer

Madison P fun headshot

Madison’s goal in life is to balance out negativity with kindness, and writing for Random Acts aligns with this goal. She is passionate about dance, finding joy through movement even in the worst of times. She received the superlative “most likely to recruit students to study abroad” at her college library job. Her exchange program sent her to northeast England where she learned much about herself and the world, even discovering her love for flying that led to her career as a flight attendant. When she has free time in her hectic life, she enjoys attending live theater, background acting, reading, and traveling.

If Madison had one superpower, she would choose the power to speak every language fluently so that she could better connect with anyone.

“We wear clothes, and speak, and create civilizations, and believe we are more than wolves. But inside us there is a word we cannot pronounce and that is who we are.”

Anthony Marra, “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena”
