Welcome all to our Random Acts June Newsletter,
The recent murder of George Floyd and subsequent police brutality at protests have ignited outrage about racial inequality and systemic racism and oppression that has finally reached a tipping point in America. Many of us have taken to the streets and all of us have had important conversations about race in the past month. As a white man, I have taken a deeper look at the ways in which I have turned a blind eye toward my own privilege and to the suffering of others and I have realized my own shameful complicity in maintaining the status quo simply by too often remaining silent when I could have raised my voice.
We have also had occasion to reflect at Random Acts on how we can bring our mission of “conquering the world, one act of kindness at a time” to bear in the fight for racial equality. And we want to note that sometimes kindness must be fierce to be effective. Sometimes raising our fists against tyranny and injustice is the very kindest thing we can do. With that in mind, Random Acts is standing with Black Lives Matter and throwing our support behind the protests that have swept the globe in recent weeks. We are exploring partnerships with other organizations to fight systemic racism and we are actively searching for ways to directly fund projects that address these issues.
Just as I have been reflecting on my position of white male privilege, Random Acts is doing some soul searching as well. We are committed to bringing greater diversity to our all-volunteer staff and we are seeking out ways to educate and empower our staff and our global community about fighting systemic oppression and fostering equality and justice. Random Acts will be sharing more resources with you soon.
I’ve seen Random Acts supporters out there in the protests and online, being vocal, taking a stand against racism and police abuse, and I’m so proud to be a part of this community that champions justice and equality.
